Union Process Produces Limestone Grinding Attritor For Flue Gas Desulphurization

Akron, OH...Union Process recently built a custom CL-200 Attritor for limestone grinding. The mill is part of a complete system designed, produced and implemented by Chemco Systems, LP, of Monongahela, PA, to grind limestone for the purpose of flue gas desulphurization.

The complete system includes the limestone storage silo, gravometric feeder, CL-200 Attritor, mill product tank, hydrocyclone feed pumps and hydrocyclone.

The process begins with limestone measuring approximately 5 mm in size. The limestone and water are fed into the top of the mill and then through a special throat. The mixture is forced down into the media bed by the impellors located in the mill throat.

The finely ground limestone slurry exits through the top of the mill into a mill product tank. The coarse limestone settles to the bottom of the mill product tank and is pumped from the bottom of this tank into the bottom of the mill for regrind. The finely ground limestone slurry is pumped from the top of the mill product tank to a hydrocyclone cluster for the final classification. The final product, 95%< 325mesh, will exit the hydrocyclone overflow and is stored in the final product storage tank. The underflow of the hydrocyclone is returned to the mill top inlet for regrind.

The CL-200 Attritor is powered by a 125 HP motor, has a working media volume of 100 gallons and offers a maximum throughput of 16,000 lbs./hr. of dry limestone. The high efficiency CL-200 uses approximately 50% less power when compared to conventional ball mills of a similar capacity, thus resulting in substantially lower operating costs.
